This is incredibly ... Read More We are raising funds for a power wheelchair and van lift for Gary Behrens in honor of his 75th birthday. As you know, my parents live in a multi-level home and in order for my Dad to maneuver inside his home he has to go outside and up/down a ramp to get between the bedroom and family room area. This is incredibly difficult to do in a manual wheelchair (and truthfully it is impossible for him to do with a hefty push from my mom). Additionally, and more importantly, he is very limited in the community when in a manual wheelchair. He is unable to move from his home to the car or from the car to the church or school area without assistance from others. This fall he was unable to attend his beloved tailgate gatherings at Stanford because moving him in the tanbark is too difficult. We have gone through the process of applying for a power chair through is insurance. This claim was denied. A power chair costs roughly $5000.00 and the van lift is $2500. This is a costly endeavor but without this option my Dad is dependent on my mom and others to move in his home and also in the community. In a power chair he can ride up the ramp of the van, transfer out of his power chair and into the driver's seat. He can move from his van down the ramp and into church or Redeemer School independently. INDEPENDENCE in the community is essential for his well-being.
