My name is Morgan and I'm a junior in high school. Recently in english class we read Three Cups of Tea by David Oliver Relin and Greg Mortenson about a man who built and funded schools in the Pakistan and Afghanistan regions. The book made me want to do something about the poverty that I feel so strongly about in the world. When I stumbled upon Project Mercy and learned about the ways they are teaching self help in Yedebon, Ethiopia, I was reminded of a few past experiences. I have been going on mission trips to Mexico for 5 years and last summer did an internship at a church in Mexico. The children and families in Mexico captured my heart. Their living conditions are so minimal and consist of such little luxuries. The illness and poverty brought me to tears but seeing their resilience quickly put a smile back on my face. We could have given those people medicine, food, water or books, but what would they do when supply ran out? That's what I love about Project Mercy. They teach self sufficiency so that people they help can continue to help themselves. Project Mercy stays true to the phrase, "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.''
