Ever since watching the Dateline MSNBC feature highlighting what is taking place in Uganda, my life hasn't been the same. Each night, children between the ages of 3-10 are walking 5 miles to a safety shelter, all to make the return walk the next morning. These shelters are packed with 100's of children, providing a dirt floor to sleep and a blanket of safety throughout the night. As a parent of two, I simply could not sit on the sidelines and not do anything. I hope to, through the user of YourCause.com, educate others about Uganda, the LRA, and what all is taking place and what we can do about it. Close

Originally called the Uganda Children's Charity Foundation, Children of Uganda was founded in 1995. As a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, Children of Uganda works in conjunction with local non-governmental organizations in Uganda to provide education and support to over 700 children in need. We have administrative offices in Dallas, Texas and Kampala, the capital of Uganda, where programs are administered by more than 50 local staff members dispersed in three districts of Uganda.
The mission of Children of Uganda is to support and empower hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda to lead successful and productive lives. Our vision is that all children in Uganda receive an education to become healthy, productive members of their community who assume leadership roles and positively impact Ugandan society.

For more than 60 years, UNICEF has been the world’s leading international children’s organization, working in over 150 countries to address the ongoing issues that affect why kids are dying. UNICEF provides lifesaving nutrition, clean water, education, protection and emergency response, saving more young lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. While millions of children continue to die every year of preventable causes like dehydration, upper respiratory infections and measles, UNICEF, with the support of partnering organizations and donors alike, has the global experience, resources and reach to give children the best hope of survival.

Northern Uganda has been a site of struggle, violence, suffering and mass displacement for more than two decades. While there is no clear punctuation to mark the end of conflict, a relative peace over the past few years has emboldened communities to move toward recovery and development with determination. Hope is indeed on the horizon. This determination must be wholly supported if the transition to sustainable peace, linked to broader development aims, is to succeed.

Fugees Family, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to working with child survivors of war. We build upon the power of soccer to galvanize these kids by giving them the support and structure they need to realize their vast potential. Five years ago, Coach Luma Mufleh started a Fugees team to provide refugee boys with free access to organized soccer. Since then, our programming has grown to include year-round soccer for 86 boys aged 10-18, after-school tutoring, a private academy, and an academic enrichment camp.
The Fugees Family provides a space for the kids to heal and meet others like them, from different countries, who have been through similar experiences. The players might begin by regarding one another with distrust or even hostility. By conducting drills with various players grouped together and enforcing an English-only policy at all times, the kids learn to cooperate. Africans and Asians, Northern and Southern Sudanese, Muslims and Christians, Sunni and Shia Muslims - they all play on the same team, finding their commonalities instead of focusing on their differences. Their bonds make them more secure in their own identity and more capable of acclimating to the mainstream.
The Fugees Family works to afford our kids equal access to the educational opportunities others in their age group have, helping them to acquire the social and academic skills necessary to succeed. Our goal is for the players to work hard and graduate from high school with a plan for college, technical school, or job training. We are committed to an approach that takes the whole individual into account: we are consistently involved in all areas of the kids' lives, we set high expectations on and off the field, we foster a familial atmosphere, and we have fun.

Educate Uganda focuses on children who have lost one or both of their parents. For the ONE MILLION children who have been orphaned by AIDS, the ability to attend school is often difficult due to the compulsory school fees, which must still be paid in Uganda. School fees are about $25 PER YEAR. However, in a country where the average wage earned is approximately $30 per month, the school fees are simply not affordable for most AIDS orphans. In fact the extended families that care for orphans see school fees as a major factor in deciding whether to take on additional children orphaned by AIDS, malaria, or other diseases. By providing the annual school fees of $25, the orphans and their families will have hope for a better life.
Families in Uganda are not the only ones facing the problem of obtaining basic needs. The schools are also faced with the difficulty of providing the best learning environment for their students. In addition to assisting the orphaned students with their school fees, Educate Uganda is also working to improve the environment in which they learn and the materials the educators have available. Educate Uganda wants the schools we are working with to be a haven for the students.

The I WILL FOUNDATION is a non-profit organization established to help people, with the will to work hard, overcome adversity and challenges caused by life altering illness or traumatic injury. Our primary goal is to provide motivational and inspirational support
through hands on training, coaching, and financial support when necessary. We believe the will to survive and accomplish all tasks, great and small, is present in all of us whether we recognize it or not. If you have the desire to live your life to the fullest, we can help you.
Matt Long, a New York City firefighter, Author of “The Long Run”, established I WILL FOUNDATION. Matt was struck by a bus and critically injured on the streets of Manhattan while riding his bike to work in the winter of 2005. He received 68 units of blood in the first
40 hours following the accident and spent 5 months in the hospital.
He had 40 surgeries in less than two years and has been in physical therapy since. Matt survived this horrific accident due to his high level of fitness and determination as an active runner and Ironman triathlete, both of which helped him in his recovery. It is this perseverance that he wants to share with others who may think things seem impossible.
Matt attributes his turning point to when he stopped listing what he wanted to do and started listing what he WILL do. His outlook post-accident changed and his comeback began.

Brett's Blessings, created in memory of Brett Burdick, will help bring smiles to children in the ICU at Children's Hospital Dallas as well as other local hospitals. With your donation of a new, unwrapped toy or monetary donation you will help many children who are in the ICU, experience joy through playtime and learning during their stay at the hospital. In honor of Brett Burdick, we ask you to join us in this worthy cause. We will be collecting toys and accepting donations through the year with the big toy drop off taking place in the month of April of each year, which was the month of Brett's birthday.
The first annual toy collection in April 2009 for Brett's Blessings was so successful, that this year we have a goal to do even more. We would like to collect as many as 2,000 toys and spread them to more hospitals in the local area in addition to Children's ICU. Through your donation of a new, unwrapped toy or monetary donation (with which toys will be purchased with), we can achieve this goal. Achieving this goal will put many smiles on children's faces while honoring the memory of a very special boy who always had a smile on his face, Brett Burdick.
