Description of Cause:
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy. The disease can strike anyone. As ALS progresses, speech becomes more difficult and muscle movement and control are reduced. Paralysis occurs in the end stages, eliminating the ability to breathe. Unfortunately, ALS only attacks motor neurons, so while body functions deteriorate the individual remains fully alert and mentally coherent.
