With 35% of the population living below the poverty line, Peru is one of the poorest countries in the world. Trujillo, the second largest city in Peru, suffers greatly as it does not benefit from the large amount of tourism the rest of the country is accustomed to. In February of this year I will be starting my work at the nonprofit organization Supporting Kids in Peru (SKIP) as part of their Economic Development Team. Rather than giving hand outs we will be providing microcredit options and business education classes to the poverty stricken area. Additionally, we have a few of our own ideas to help educate and progress the poor while working with SKIP that we are excited about. Your donations directly support the microloan and funding program whereby small local businesses or homes can purchase tools or equipment to make their businesses and lives more successful or rewarding. All loans are to be paid back with an interest rate of 1% a month. This is in place to hold the families or businesses accountable to the loan program. It is a radical new approach that is working in many impoverished communities in Asia and Latin America. Any support that you can provide would be appreciated. Thank you. Additionally, please visit my blog at www.travelpod.com to learn more about the work we are doing. Close

Our philosophy: We believe in helping families to help themselves so they can improve their situation and afford sending their children to school. We do not believe that we should give them everything while they do nothing. Therefore, we work alongside with them to achieve common goals.
Our challenge: Unlike public education systems in western countries, those in Peru are not free and many families can't afford their costs. For many uneducated parents, the difference that an education could make in their children’s futures remains unrealized. In addition, a wide range of social problems from family violence to drug dependency directly influence a child’s academic success. Education is proven to be the best way to lead a country towards development. This is why we are fighting to address these issues and to put education at the forefront.
