Thousands of KPMG LLP employees came together in more than 90 offices nationwide today, to participate in a community service event which combines the audit, tax and advisory firm's support for literacy with charitable giving.
"This national service day reflects our firm's long history of volunteerism. Instead of holiday parties, our employees gathered in the spirit of caring to brighten the holidays for some children," said Tim Flynn, Chairman of KPMG.
'Operation Holiday Bear Hugs'
KPMG employees mobilized for "Operation Holiday Bear Hugs" to create over 22,000 holiday packages to be donated to local charities and hospitals for children. The holiday packages consist of a new teddy bear, which employees assembled and dressed and adorned with a special holiday greeting for the child receiving the bear.
The 22,000 packages each include a brand new book, enough to fill a small library. The books are provided through KPMG's Family for Literacy (FFL) program. Through FFL, the firm teams up with the non-profit group First Book, to donate new books to underprivileged children. In October, KPMG donated its one millionth book through the Family for Literacy program.
KPMG employees chose one of the following titles for their holiday packages:
"Arthur's Reading Race" by Marc Brown; "Just My Friend and Me" by Mercer Mayer; "Nate the Great" by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat; "The Berenstain Bears' Moving Day," and "The Berenstain Bears and the Slumber Party," both by Stan & Jan Berenstain
Upon completion, the packages will be delivered today to charities chosen locally by each office and then presented to the children in time for the holidays.
