AT&T Joins U.S. Effort To Reduce Energy Usage Intensity

AT&T yesterday joined the U.S. Department of Energy's Save Energy Now LEADER initiative, which asks that companies pledge to reduce their energy intensity by 25 percent or more during the next 10 years. Save Energy Now LEADER is an ambitious national public-private initiative to drive significant energy intensity and carbon emission reductions across the U.S. industrial sector. AT&T is among more than 30 companies making this initial pledge to reduce energy intensity.
This commitment follows the recent appointment of AT&T's first director of energy, John Schinter. Yesterday, Schinter joined Assistant Secretary of Energy Cathy Zoi as well as other participating companies at a pledge-signing ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, DC.
Earlier this year, AT&T announced a goal to reduce energy usage intensity by 15 percent in 2009, relative to data growth on its network. AT&T has taken a number of steps over the past year to reduce energy consumption, including introducing a series of efficiency-focused initiatives around AT&T's datacenters, network and facilities.
Said John Schinter, director of energy, AT&T Services, Inc.: "We are actively working to manage our energy usage intensity, and we applaud the U.S. Department of Energy's effort to bring together companies that share a similar commitment. The Save Energy Now LEADER target complements energy optimization efforts already underway inside AT&T."
Over the next 12 months, pledge signatories agree to take the following additional steps toward greater energy efficiency:- Establish energy use and energy intensity baselines
- Report changes in energy intensity, energy use data and achievements annually to DOE
- Through Save Energy Now LEADER, the DOE is setting energy reduction targets that it believes will create demand for energy efficient technology today and into the future. "Supporting the development of the latest industrial technologies plays an important role in helping U.S. industry to lead the world in energy efficiency and productivity," said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. "Working together with American manufacturing and IT industries, we will be able to create new jobs, reduce industrial energy use and limit damaging greenhouse gas emissions."
