MY STORY
After three years at a public healthcare consulting firm in Boston, I'm looking to transition into a career that helps other people through the financial empowerment of microlending. For the last five years, I have participated in the Walk for Hunger for Project Bread in Boston the first Sunday in May. Instead of walking 20 miles this year, I'm going to be donating at least 500 hours of my time to volunteer as the Economic Development Coordinator for the SKIP organization in Peru by the date of this year's annual walk. Your supporting donation will be going directly towards stabiliizing families through education and microcredit.
These two causes are closely linked as family social situations affect a child's attendance and academic success. A stable family can support a quality education. SKIP is an NGO working in an impoverished district of Trujillo, Peru. "Our diverse team is comprised of teachers, social workers, psychologists, economic development workers and a range of other volunteers. We provide school fees, uniforms and materials to over 400 children each year. In addition, we provide lessons to reinforce what they are learning in school and help with homework. Support is also given to parents to improve economic and social stability."
Since Bangladeshi economist Yunus won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for Microfinance for pioneering the use of tiny, seemingly insignificant loans - microcredit - to lift millions out of poverty, poor people around the world, especially women, have been able to buy cows, a few chickens or the cell phone they desperately needed to get ahead. Sometimes these loans are the difference between families needing their children's help to put food on the table and being able to afford to send them to school. Close

Our philosophy: We believe in helping families to help themselves so they can improve their situation and afford sending their children to school. We do not believe that we should give them everything while they do nothing. Therefore, we work alongside with them to achieve common goals.
Our challenge: Unlike public education systems in western countries, those in Peru are not free and many families can't afford their costs. For many uneducated parents, the difference that an education could make in their children’s futures remains unrealized. In addition, a wide range of social problems from family violence to drug dependency directly influence a child’s academic success. Education is proven to be the best way to lead a country towards development. This is why we are fighting to address these issues and to put education at the forefront.
