Habitat has an open-door policy: All who desire to be a part of this work are welcome, regardless of religious preference or background. Since 1987 Habitat-Spokane has built over 180 houses, providing those families with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat works with families in need "partner families" to build simple, decent housing. The houses are sold to partner families with a 0% loan held by Habitat-Spokane. Habitat is not a give-away program. In addition to paying cost and monthly mortgage payments, homeowner families invest 500 hours of their own labor (sweat equity) in building their houses and the houses of others. This labor reduces the cost of the houses, increases the pride of ownership and fosters the development of positive relationships. Close
